Winter Weather Advisory Issued for Sandia and Manzano Mountains

At 7:40 PM on January 7, 2025, the National Weather Service’s (NWS) Albuquerque office issued a winter weather advisory for the Sandia and Manzano Mountains. This advisory will be in effect until 8:00 AM on January 8, 2025.

What to Expect

The NWS reported that residents should expect a total accumulation of one to three inches of snowfall, along with heavy winds. Wind gusts of 35 miles per hour are expected, which will create blowing snow and reduced visibility. Roads will be hazardous, due to icy and snow-packed road conditions, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and steep hills. Numerous accidents have already been reported. Roads may become slick and icy, particularly during the Wednesday morning commute. Use extreme caution and plan for extra travel time if driving cannot be avoided.

NMDOT Road Conditions Map as of 7:53 PM on January 7, 2025. Yellow indicates “difficult driving conditions.” Red indicates “severe driving conditions.”

What Precautions Should You Take

The NWS advises that drivers should operate at reduced speeds and with extra space between vehicles. Drivers should stay back no less than fifty feet from snowplows and salt spreaders. Those who are traveling should carry a winter version of the ”ten essentials,” making sure to include blankets or sleeping bags, water, food, and a flashlight.

In Torrance County, residents can sign up for text message alerts through the county’s participation in the Onsolve Code Red Community Notification program. NWS updates for Torrance County are best drawn from the sensors located at the Moriarty Municipal Airport, as other locations draw weather reports from sensors located at the Belen Regional Airport, which experiences distinct weather effects due to being in a valley.
