Strong Thunderstorm Shifts To Torrance County and Mountainair Area

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque reported a strong thunderstorm moving into west central Torrance County, including Mountainair, at 9:15 p.m. MDT on Saturday, September 6, 2025. The storm is expected to remain a threat until at least 9:45 p.m. MDT.

At the time of the alert, Doppler radar tracked the storm 7 miles southwest of Manzano Mountain State Park, about 21 miles southeast of Belen, moving northeast at 20 mph. The storm is capable of producing wind gusts up to 50 mph and hail up to three-quarters of an inch in diameter (penny size).

Expected Impacts:

  • Strong winds may knock down small tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects.
  • Small hail could cause minor damage to vehicles and outdoor property.
  • Hazardous travel conditions may develop, particularly along US-60 between mile markers 191 and 211.

Residents in the Mountainair area should monitor conditions closely and be prepared for sudden weather changes. While this is not yet a severe thunderstorm warning, storms of this strength can still cause localized damage and hazardous driving conditions.
