Bomb Threat Turns Out To Be A Dud
On August 30, 2024, social media users began to report they had seen evidence of alleged bomb threats made on Snapchat against the Moriarty-Edgewood School District and the Estancia Municipal School District.
These reports turned out to be false. Addressing the subject via email, Torrance County Sheriff's Office (TCSO) Undersheriff Stephanie Reynolds said that she had not seen any bomb threats for either the Moriarty-Edgewood School District or the Estancia Municipal School District and that no one from either school district had contacted the TCSO regarding an alleged bomb threat. Reynolds said she had no indication that the New Mexico State Police had activated its bomb squad.
Speaking more generally regarding threats of harm, Reynolds stated,
A request that I would like to pose to the community would be that if they hear of any threats to please contact our Dispatch Center so the appropriate agencies can be contacted. The Moriarty Police Department and the Estancia Police Department have designated officers in the schools and should be notified immediately of any posed threat. The Torrance County Sheriff’s Office would be the designated agency for the Mountainair School District. All sister agencies work well together and will do our very best to ensure the safety of the youth and the staff of the schools within our community. Furthermore, if anyone sees a bag, or box, or any closed item that looks out of place or that is left unattended, ... notify the staff of the school to call the Dispatch Center for assigned assistance in removing and identifying the contents within.
